As you might have noticed, this site changed quite significantly since the last time it was up there in cyberspace. As some of you might have also noticed, this is the first time I’m writing something in about 8 months. Quite some stuff has happened in the meantime and eventually I came to the conclusion to give this blog another try. Seeing as how friend and colleague Oppie can keep his webcomic (Cheap plug? Where?) to a farely regular update schedule I must surely be able to do so as well. So, what’s new?
- New design, as you might have noticed. Built from the ground up, coding and design by me, inspiration from other sites. I personally like it and think it works pretty well in delivering my content and seperating it from the less important content in the sidebar. In general I’d say it has a bit more life in it compared to the rather dull old design.
- The eyecatching top section partially displaying my latest post(s). If you manage to miss this you might want to get your eyes checked…
- Dropped support for Internet Explorer 6. Yes, that’s a feature in this day and age. Bigger companies such as Google have given up hope for this caveman of the web and as a developer I cannot agree more. As I’m typing this I realize people using it won’t even read this. Big whoop.
- Mobile device support, most notably for iPhone users. I’ve recently bought an iPhone (or as some colleagues would call it: turned to the Dark Side) and I cannot deny it, and therefore myself, support especially since it’s so simple to pull off.
- The sidebar now has a decently working Twitter widget. My previous one broke a lot of my old design in some cases. Also new is the recent comments section which will hopefully encourage people in one way or another… Hint hint…
- If you’ve read a post that you are willing to share then you can now do so by either throwing it onto Twitter or printing it. Yes, I know, who prints these days… It’s still a pretty cool feature though. Guess one could use it to print an article to read during boring meetings and such…
Now that’s the technical side of the story. There’s a content side to it as well. The previous installment of this blog mainly focused on tech stuff. Not so surprising seeing as how I work in IT, but in the end I never really got motivated to post a lot of things. I guess the main problem is that when it comes to IT most blogs are about problems and solving them. A lot of solutions are already available and for the odd solution that isn’t you will mostly find forums with people asking the same questions but never getting the answers. Got to love it when that happens.
I cannot possibly fill that void, so why try? Most of the time I’m just happy that after hours of searching, trying, blood, sweat, tears and other bodily fluids I can scream out loud that I’ve solved it. Most of the time I can’t even bring up the focus to write a blogpost on what I encountered and how it was solved because it was either a combination of lots of factors, something you could’ve found yourself or just the luck of the Irish (which I am not by the way). So that’s something you won’t be seeing much in the near future.
What will you find here then? I guess the main component of any blog is an opinion. Without it there is no blog. Apparently some people call me whiny, because the only time I speak out online is to whine about something. Whether it’s the weather, hardware, software or certain holidays. While I’m not a depressed, negative hermit sitting in a cave with his iPhone being charged by a guinea pig charger there is a piece of truth in there. It’s what blogging is all about. You have something to share albeit good or bad and write you it down. Therapy in a certain way. I have made some general distinctions in what I think could end up on this blog in the form of my categories. For old times sake I’ve kept my old posts in case someone wants to read them.
